We Think We Understand Our Behaviours. 2003
We Think We Understand Our Behaviours is a generative net artwork that transforms Stanza's DNA sequence into a continuous stream of sound. Using the four-letter genetic code — A, T, C and G — the work translates the billions of letters in his genome into an evolving noise sequence, running at a rate of one letter per second. The complete sequence takes approximately 107 years to process. Launched online in 2003, the work operates as a biological clock, counting through the human genome in real time. Voices of a mother and daughter reading the sequence accompany the sound, connecting genetic information with questions of identity, inheritance and human behaviour.
The work forms part of Genomixer Stanza's award-winning net art project exploring the open-source publication of his DNA as a digital data archive. It considers the relationship between biological code, technology and the limits of our understanding of what makes us who we are.
